Like many independent retailers across the country, Christina Villegas had to close the doors to her concept shop called Yoya during the pandemic. But today, Yoya is very much open and thriving again. Villegas has managed to reinvent the New York store, bringing her daughter Mila in as a partner and moving slightly away from its twenty-plus-year reign as the West Village’s go-to for cool, directional kidswear towards a space that includes childrenswear, womenswear, vintage, accessories, and home objets. Pieces you might discover on a trip to Yoya include colorful printed balloon pants from Spanish kids brand Bobo Choses, a pair of leather gloves with a Murano ring attached, or a Japanese ceramic incense holder in the shape of a rabbit.
While Yoya has always stocked treasures from around the world, this weekend, it’s celebrating Latina makers, as Villegas was born in Colombia and it’s a place she holds dear. Called “Alma Latina,” the special sale begins today and will run through the weekend, ending on April 27. There will be a range of work from female designers on display, including the brands Borgo de Nor and Helecho Collective, as well as Renata Lozano,Mariana Velasquez of Casa Velasquez, and Paula Mendoza. These designers create vibrant fashion and jewelry, from striking floral printed dresses to sculptural gold jewelry and embroidered tunics.

“It’s designed to feel intimate,” Mila explained. “It’s a change to meet the designers, discover their work, and create a sense of connection within our community.” She added, “Having a physical space where we can bring these designers together feels incredibly meaningful to us.”
To shop the pop-up, visit Yoya at 338 W. 4th Street from today through April 28.
