Now that The Social Network is officially getting a follow-up film, Andrew Garfield has a big question to answer: Will he be back to smash another 40 laptops?
The Oscar-nominee who played Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin in the 2010 film was asked about the project while walking the red carpet at the New York Film Festival. But don't hold your breath — Garfield was quick to shut down any ideas that he might fill the role a second time around.
"No, no," the actor told IndieWire. "Eduardo is in Singapore having a good time."

Garfield makes a solid point: Saverin didn't really figure into Facebook's future after co-founding the social media site with Mark Zuckerberg; in fact, the tech entrepreneur renounced his U.S. citizenship and moved to Singapore in 2009. Despite speculation that he moved to avoid a massive tax bill, Saverin has insisted that it "was based solely on my interest in working and living" in Singapore.
Is Garfield excited to see the new film, despite not being involved himself?
"Oh yeah," the actor confirmed.
Now titled The Social Reckoning, the film is being billed as a "companion piece" rather than a direct sequel to the 2010 tech drama. It will once again be penned by Oscar-winning writer Aaron Sorkin, who will also serve as director.
While the 2010 film documented the origins of the social media site that Zuckerberg launched as a Harvard undergraduate, the new film draws inspiration from The Wall Street Journal's 2021 investigation "The Facebook Files." The report alleged, based on internal documents and employee interviews, that the company was aware of the platform's ability to inflict real-world harm, but took no actions to correct those issues.

On Friday, Sony announced that The Social Reckoning has found its cast: Succession alum Jeremy Strong is stepping into the role of Zuckerberg, who was portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg in the first film. The movie will also star Oscar winner Mikey Madison (Anora) as Facebook employee and whistleblower Frances Haugen, while The Bear's Jeremy Allen White will play Jeff Horwitz, the Wall Street Journal reporter who assisted Haugen in her efforts. Bill Burr is set to fill an undisclosed role.

The follow-up film has tough shoes to fill: The original Social Network thrilled with its chronicling of Facebook's creation and the ensuing legal battle between Zuckerberg and Saverin. The film was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture, and won three: Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin, plus Best Original Score and Best Film Editing. None of the OG cast members have been attached to return, including Eisenberg, Garfield, Justin Timberlake, and Armie Hammer.
The Social Reckoning is slated to hit theaters Oct. 9, 2026.
