Christy Martin calls Sydney Sweeney a “friend” and an “ally” after the movie Christy struggled at the box office

Ruby Rose called Sweeney “a cretin” and said Christy "deserved better"

The sports drama directed by David MichĂŽd was released on Nov. 7

Christy Martin is coming to Sydney Sweeney’s defense one day after Ruby Rose shared her opinion of Sweeney's portrayal of the boxer in the biopic Christy.

“I’ve always been a fighter. My life reflected that in every way and now I fight for others. The past few days I have seen some people attack my friend Sydney Sweeney,” Martin captioned an Instagram photo of herself with the Euphoria star on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

The 57-year-old former professional boxer continued to praise the 28-year-old movie star who brought the story of her life to the movie, which opened on Nov. 7 and became one of the top 12 worst-performing openings for movies playing on more than 2,000 screens, according to Box Office Mojo.

“Syd not only worked her ass off for this film, she worked her ass off for me," Martin wrote. "For my story. For so many others suffering in silence. So I want to be clear about who Syd is. She is my friend and ally!”

Martin did not name any critics specifically, but her message came after Rose, 39, shared opposing views on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

In a Threads post, Rose spoke highly of the original Christy script, calling it both “incredible” and “life changing.”

The Batwoman star claimed she was supposed to be involved in the project as Rosie, a fictional character who was based on Martin's high school girlfriend, Sherry Lusk. Jess Gabor played the role in the final film.

Martin and Lusk met in eighth grade and played basketball together before their romance began in high school.

“Most of us were actually gay,” Rose added of those involved in the early stages of the film, seemingly before Sweeney was added to the production. “It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.”

“For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people’. None of ‘the people’ want to see someone... parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period,” the John Wick: Chapter 2 actress said. “Christy deserved better.”

The sports drama follows the professional and personal struggles Martin faced during her boxing career. Despite grossing just $1.3 million during its opening weekend, Sweeney told fans on Instagram that she was "so deeply proud" of the movie.

"thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come," Sweeney wrote. "if christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded. so yes I’m proud. why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life. thank you christy. i love you."

Even before the movie's wide release, Martin was in Sweeney's corner. "You can feel someone's energy," the former boxer told PEOPLE earlier this month. "Either they have it or they don't. She felt very down-to-earth to me. As big of a star as she is, she still felt grounded. She's in this for the same reason that I want to share my story. She understood that it was going to really make a difference."
