- *Devil Wears Prada 2 *director David Frankel tells EW he considered a cameo role for Adrian Grenier.

- Frankel says it ultimately didn't work out, and reacts to Grenier's disappointment.

- EW previously revealed exclusively that Grenier would not return for the sequel alongside Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep.

As ** exclusively reported last year, original *Devil Wears Prada *star Adrian Grenier will not reprise the role of Nate in the upcoming sequel. Now, in an interview with EW about the highly anticipated follow-up, director David Frankel explains why the *Entourage* actor's planned cameo didn't end up happening alongside returning stars Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt.

"I had an idea about sneaking him into a cameo, and, in the end, it was just too late in our production schedule to make it happen," Frankel explains to EW, adding that the movie was officially finished less than one month before its planned release date.

In essence, there simply "wasn’t time" to add Grenier into the mix. The actor recently discussed talking with Frankel about being left out of the project — which the actor admitted to PEOPLE left him "disappointed," though he joked about the development in a new Starbucks commercial referencing the series of events.

When EW asks Frankel, who also directed the 2006 *Devil Wears Prada* film that earned $327 million in ticket sales and two Oscar nominations, what would've happened in Nate's planned cameo, the filmmaker briefly pauses.

“No, I probably shouldn’t say. But, I think I’m thrilled that he did a Starbucks commercial, which was really funny and so self-effacing," Frankel observes of Grenier, who played the love interest of Hathaway's budding journalist, Andy Sachs, in the first film. "I love the humility and the comedy of it!"

Additionally, EW also exclusively learned from a source that *Euphoria* actress Sydney Sweeney filmed a three-minute cameo for the project that was ultimately cut from the final version of the film in an effort to streamline a larger sequence meant to reintroduce Blunt's character, Emily Charlton, to audiences.

If the scene weren't nixed from the project, Sweeney would've appeared as herself, a celebrity client being fitted for a Dior outfit by Emily, who graduated from the *Runway* fashion publication (headed by Streep's Miranda Priestly) en route to leading Dior's United States division.

Representatives for Disney and Sweeney did not respond to EW's request for comment on the cut scene.

Though Sweeney and Grenier don't appear in the sequel, other returning stars include Tracie Thoms and Tibor Feldman, while pop star and "Runway" soundtrack song performer Lady Gaga also appears in the project in a two-scene cameo.

Speaking on rounding up the four main cast members for another film 20 years later, Frankel says that, "We just kept saying no, any time it ever came up [to do a sequel] from 2006 to 2023," a sentiment he echoes from quotes he gave EW in our 2021 15th anniversary oral history that reunited the initial cast and crew — including Grenier.

"I think, in our minds, the experience of making the first movie was so joyful, that the idea of reuniting everyone seemed like a family get-together that we all pined for. We never had an idea or even a clue about how the characters could be reunited until about two years ago," Frankel admits, but says that Streep, Hathaway, and Blunt's reunion on stage at SAG's 2024 Actor Awards lit a fire that set the sequel in motion.

“I couldn’t imagine doing it unless everyone was in it together," Frankel says, later adding: "When we said, *Okay, we think we have an idea*, Meryl got the first call, and once she said, 'Okay, I’m intrigued, it’s worth exploring, you guys seem to have an angle here,' within a few hours I called everybody. There were screams at the other end of the phone!"

*The Devil Wears Prada 2* is in theaters May 1.
