On Monday's episode of the popular podcast Comedy Bang! Bang!, legendary filmmaker Edgar Wright pitched a project that would daringly drag a beloved Warner Bros. animated franchise into the 2020s – then, days later, he dashed our dreams of one day seeing Scooby-Doo solve the case of cancel culture.

The sad fact about the state of classic cartoons in 2025 is that, for many of the beloved franchises of Saturday mornings past, there are jokes, episodes and entire characters that simply haven't aged well into our modern era. Companies such as Warner Bros. have had to add content warning to certain entries in their immense back catalog indicating that some cartoons contain racist caricatures or racy jokes that are less palatable to a modern audience, but there are still a few classic properties have been unaffected by the push for cultural sensitivity – and Wright wants to change that.

During his appearance on Comedy Bang! Bang!, Wright (rebranded as Edgar Wrong) comically announced his intention to make a cancel culture-themed feature film for the Scooby-Doo franchise called Scooby-Don't – but, then, in a Reddit AMA just days later, he disappointed fans of hyper-sensitive hijinks by revealing that Scooby-Don't is already dead.

Now who will solve the mystery of its murder?

When discussing the famous cartoons now deemed culturally insensitive with Comedy Bang! Bang! host Scott Aukerman, Wright (Wrong?) posed an interesting question: “Does cancel culture mean that he's now called Scooby-Don't?” Almost immediately, Wright decided that his next project following his science fiction action thriller Running Man will be a Scooby-Don't feature film that will fix whatever sins the talking dog and his hippie friends may have committed in the past.

Then, when the Running Man press tour reached Reddit just days later, eager Comedy Bang! Bang! fans asked Wright for updates on his new project, only to be gravely disappointed. “When will you begin production on Scooby Don’t?” one fan asked hopefully.

Sadly, Wrong replied, "It's been cancelled before even an elevator pitch stage. The lift was not working."

“Is it true you ankled Scooby Don’t?” another fan asked of Wrong's abandoned project.

Wrong then explained why the project died in its infancy, writing back, “Yes. Scrappy Do asked for too much money and the studio balked.”

Thankfully for Comedy Bang! Bang! fans who were excited to see Wright's other pending project that he announced on Monday, the Running Man director did not announce the cancelation of his Running Man re-cut in which his head will be digitally imposed on star Glenn Powell's body.

Still, it's too bad that we'll never see Shaggy, Fred, Velma and Daphne attempt to navigate the murky waters of political correctness with Wright's droll take on the franchise -- but, honestly, it's only fitting that Scooby-Don't would immediately find itself canceled.
