Known for his rebellious spirit and magnetic intensity, James Dean’s life was cut short 70 years ago by a sudden tragedy far from the silver screen.

On Sept. 30, 1955, the 24-year-old actor was driving his Porsche 550 Spyder to a sports car race in Salinas, Calif. Witnesses claimed he wasn’t speeding when a 1950 Ford Tudor suddenly turned into his path at an intersection, per History.com.

Dean’s car was struck and he suffered massive internal injuries, as well as a broken neck. The movie star was rushed to Paso Robles War Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The accident shocked Hollywood and beyond, but Dean’s legacy has endured. Despite starring in only three major films — Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden and Giant — his performances left a mark on cinema and inspired future generations of actors, including Martin Sheen.

“All of his movies had a profound effect on my life, in my work and all of my generation,” Sheen, who narrated the documentary film James Dean: Forever Young, told Today in February 2005. “He transcended cinema acting. It was no longer acting, it was human behavior.”

So, how did James Dean die? Here's everything to know about the actor's tragic car accident.

Dean died in a car crash. He was driving his brand-new $7,000 Porsche 550 Spyder, nicknamed “Little Bastard,” to a sports car race when his car collided with a Ford Tudor sedan along then-U.S. Route 446 near Cholame, Calif.

Behind the wheel of the Ford Tudor was a 23-year-old California Polytechnic State University student named Donald Turnupseed, who was turning at an intersection when the two cars hit almost head-on, per History.com.

Witnesses insisted that Dean wasn’t speeding when the crash occurred — Turnupseed had reportedly turned left directly into the path of the Spyder. However, earlier that day, Dean had received a speeding ticket in Bakersfield, Calif., about 84 miles from the accident site, at 3:30 p.m., according to the outlet.
