McDonaldâs CEO Chris Kempczinski blamed his momâs parenting for his tiny bite and now-viral reaction to trying the fast food chainâs new Big Arch Burger
The CEO recalled finding out about his viral moment from his kids before receiving an influx of calls, emails and texts
âIâm definitely not a vegetarian,â he quipped while responding to a theory about his reaction to tasting the burger
The CEO of McDonaldâs is blaming his mother for his viral reaction to trying the new Big Arch Burger.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal shared on Instagram on Monday, April 6, Chris Kempczinski revealed why he took such a small and seemingly awkward bite while trying one of the fast food chainâs new menu items in a now-viral video that he posted on Feb. 3.
âIâm definitely not a vegetarian,â the CEO quipped while responding to some of the theories surrounding his reaction to tasting the burger. âI blame it all on my mom because she told me, âDonât talk with your mouth full.â â
âI think probably, in that case, I should have just said, âYou know what? To hell with it, Iâm gonna go talk with my mouth full.â â
As for why the CEOâs taste test went so viral? Many commenters claimed that Kempczinskiâs reaction to tasting the burger â including saying âI love this productâ â seemed to indicate that he was âactingâ for the video while not actually enjoying the tiny bite he took of the burger.
âNot a single calorie was consumed in this video,â one user wrote in the comments, while another added, âIs the BIG BITE in the room with us??â
After the Feb. 3 video went viral, Kempczinski told The Wall Street Journal that he learned of his newfound social media fame when his kids called him and said, âDad, youâve gone viral â and not in a good way.â
âThatâs when I knew, âOkay, somethingâs going on,â â he recalled. âAnd then I started getting texts and emails and calls. Invariably, they were all like âHey, have you seen this?â And itâs like, by the thousandth time, âYeah, Iâve seen it.â â

Although the response to his promotional video wasnât all positive, Kempczinski said he was happy that people were âtalking about the Big Archâ nonetheless.
âI think when you go on to social media in general you have to have a thick skin,â he added.
Beyond reactions from both fans and critics, other fast food chains â including Burger King and Wendyâs â were quick to take advantage of Kempczinskiâs viral moment.
On March 2, Tom Curtis, the president of Burger King U.S. & Canada, got his own viral moment when he shared a video of himself taking an enthusiastic bite of a Whopper.
âThought weâd replay this,â the brand wrote in the caption.
Commenters were quick to make the connection between the two videos, writing, âNow compare this to the McDonaldâs CEO.â
