Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau went on a date in Montreal in July.

Dating rumors swirled after the former prime minster attended her Lifetimes Tour shortly after.

While things publicly cooled off, in mid-September, sources told Us Weekly that the two were still seeing each other.

In late July, pop star Katy Perry and former Canadian prime minster Justin Trudeau sparked dating rumors after being seen with one another on several occasions in Montreal. On August 2, a source stated that the “romance is in very early stages.” Both Perry and Trudeau ended their long term relationships relatively recently.

On July 3, Perry and actor Orlando Bloom announced their split after six years of being engaged in a joint statement to People, saying, “Due to the abundance of recent interest and conversation surrounding Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry’s relationship, representatives have confirmed that Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting [their daughter, 4-year-old Daisy]. They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is—and always will be—raising their daughter with love, stability, and mutual respect.”

Trudeau and his ex Sophie Grégorie separated in 2023 after 18 years together. In a statement posted on Instagram at the time, Trudeau wrote, “Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversation, we have made the decision to separate. As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build. For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy. Thank you.”

On July 28, the pair shared a long day of activities together, starting with a walk in Montreal’s Mount Royal Park. TMZ obtained photos of Trudeau smiling alongside Perry as they strolled. They were then filmed eating at Le Violon. In footage obtained by TMZ, Perry and Trudeau can be seen chatting, with the singer looking attentively at Trudeau.

After their meal, they had drinks on the terrace of Taverne Atlantic.

Shortly after TMZ published the dinner video, the outlet ran an interview with Le Violon’s co-owner and co-executive chef, Danny Smiles, who served them. Smiles said Perry and Trudeau didn’t show any PDA, and “he didn’t get any dating vibes from Katy and Justin...just two friends enjoying a meal.”

Perry and Trudeau enjoyed a series of courses from the chef’s tasting menu, including lobster, tuna, lamb gnocchi, and beef tartare, according to TMZ. The meal was a few hours long, and Trudeau covered the bill. Smiles called them the “perfect guests—super chill, extremely nice to the staff.”

July 30

On July 30, Trudeau was seen at Perry’s Lifetimes Tour stop in Montreal. The former Canadian prime minister was spotted by fans in the crowd. His daughter Ella-Grace, was also at the concert, per Daily Mail.

Trudeau also sang along to Perry’s hit song “Firework.”

A source speaking with People said that the pair definitely has a connection, but it is a logistical challenge to date.

“They are interested in each other, but it will take a while to see where this goes,” the insider stated. “She is traveling around the world, and he is figuring out his life now that he is no longer prime minister of Canada, but there is an attraction. They have a lot in common.”

The source added, “Music is one of many things they can share. Both are idealists and still live in a world where they think they can make improvements, although it has gotten more difficult.”

They both have full lives already, as well as kids they share with former partners.

“Their own personal responsibilities could make this relationship move slower than it would, but there are ways to see the other and still fulfill their parenting responsibilities,” the source said. “For one thing, they each have an ex. So, duties are split in half. And long-distance relationships, while still hard, are possible for these two.”

A second source told People, “Justin is a [politician] who is used to living a secret life with his personal activity, and wouldn’t put on a public display at this stag. He knows they were being watched and is smart enough to play it low-key for now.”

“[The] timing seems good for them, although a romance is in very early stages,” the source added.

August 20

People reported that Perry and Trudeau weren’t planning another date at that point, as pursuing romantic relationships was not Perry’s focus. A source explained, “They had a casual first get-to-know-you date. And although they have shared interests and plenty to talk about, dating just isn’t on her radar. She’s stayed in touch with Justin, but there are no current plans for another meet-up.”

September 2025September 15

Us Weekly revealed that Perry and Trudeau were still seeing each other, just more quietly. “They’ve decided to be much more private about it,” a source said. “They are still speaking and are very interested in each other.”

A second source shared that their relationship “isn’t serious,” but they would spend more time together soon. “Justin has made plans to see her when she has downtime in a few weeks when she gets back from her tour in Brazil,” the source said. (Perry has a tour break from September 20 to October 3.) “Katy is taking it day by day but is very open to dating.”

The couple was seen kissing in photographs published by the Daily Mail on October 11, showing them embracing on the singer’s yacht, the Caravelle, off the coast of Santa Barbara, California. In the pics, Perry is in a black swimsuit, while Trudeau is in pants and no shirt.

A source told the publication, “She pulled up her boat next to a small public whale-watching boat, then they started making out. I didn’t realize who she was with until I saw the tattoo on the guy’s arm, and I immediately realized it was Justin Trudeau.”

October 20

Perry appeared to hint at her new relationship with Trudeau on Instagram. Fans noticed that the singer liked a satirical The Onion post that joked about her “Canadian manufacturing” era, a clear wink to her rumored romance with the former Canadian prime minister.

October 24

A source told Us Weekly that things are going well between Perry and Trudeau: “Katy is really into it. She’s very happy. She’s trying to keep it low-key, and they’ve spent a lot of private time together. She’s not looking to publicize this relationship.”

The insider added, “Their friends think they are a good match, but he actually hasn’t met a lot of her friends yet.”

October 25

The couple was spotted in Paris, France, on Perry’s 41st birthday. They reportedly went to a cabaret show at the Crazy Horse, and could be seen holding hands in photos and videos shared by TMZ.

Perry was wearing a red satin dress and Trudeau wore a black suit over a black T-shirt.

October 30

Sources speaking to People and Entertainment Tonight late in October shared how things are developing between them.

“This relationship is already fairly serious and definitely moving in that direction,” a Canadian political source told People. “They are very much a couple and have been seeing each other as often as possible.”

The insider noted, “Obviously, she’s busy, but so is he. Yet he goes the extra mile to be with her when possible—especially when it’s important.”

The source explained, “He is in awe of her talent but also impressed with her intelligence and grasp of issues affecting everyone. He likes her outspokenness and that she isn’t afraid to voice her opinion."

Another Canadian source told People that Perry has changed Trudeau’s perspective and mood.

“He is a much happier person now,” the insider detailed. “Stresses are greatly diminished. And he is intrigued with Katy. They have fun together, laugh a lot, talk about everything. His life is much improved, and his relationship with Katy has had a lot to do with it.”

Of Perry, another source told Entertainment Tonight, “It all feels like a fresh start for her. She’s feeling good. Katy has been having the best time with Justin. He makes her feel special.”

During a concert, Perry responded to a fan asking her to marry them with a ring, confirming her relationship. The interaction was shared on TikTok.

“This guy is trying to get me to marry him and he has a ring in his hand,” Perry can be heard saying. “No! I am dating someone else for crying out fucking loud.”

That same day Trudeau posted his Halloween costume with his son, Hadrien. Trudeau was wearing a shark costume referencing Katy Perry’s famously viral Left Shark from her 2015 Super Bowl Halftime Show. Hadrien was a surfer.

Sophie Grégoire, Trudeau’s former wife, made an appearance on the Arlene Is Alone podcast, where she was asked about the new couple. She and Trudeau were married for 18 years before they announced their separation in 2023.

Host Arlene Dickinson asked about observing all the publicity and Grégoire answered, “We’re human beings and stuff affects us. Normal. How you react to stuff is your decision. So I choose to try to listen to the music instead of the noise."

“I’m very aware that a lot of public stuff out there can be triggers. Right, we’re humans,” she continued. “What I do with it is my decision. The woman I want to become through this is my decision. Does that mean I don’t have emotions? That I don’t cry, scream, laugh? No. Especially that I’m a super tender heart, right? But it’s my decision after that, between the emotion and the reaction.”

She added, “I’ll let myself be disappointed by someone, I’ll let myself be angry, be sad. And I know for a fact how important it is, as a mental health advocate, to feel those emotions.”

Grégoire did say that she and Trudeau make an effort to preserve a healthy family life for their kids.

“We have separate lives, but we have one family life,” she said. “You need a common, conscious decision that our family is our greatest creation and we’re going to feed it together, no matter if we’re on different life paths.”
