A lot has changed in the past 20 years, and The Devil Wears Prada 2 addressed most of these shifts as they pertained to the fashion media landscape. Diving in headfirst, the film discussed the shifting expectations, budgets, and—perhaps most notably—the level of accountability faced by magazines and the public figures who run them. But the world premiere in New York City highlighted another point of evolution in the industry: the red carpet.

Back in 2006, when The Devil Wears Prada first hit theaters, the stars showed up to the premiere in their early-aughts finest. Sarah Jessica Parker wore a cap-sleeve metallic mini, Ashley Tisdale layered a black sleeveless dress over cropped lace leggings, and Hayden Panettiere joined in on the fun in a belted silver dress.

But the little minidresses that populated the red carpet were far more casual than the 2026 gowns that showed up at David Geffen Hall last night—a comparison that can be felt most ardently in the leading actors’ looks. Anne Hathaway, for starters, upgraded her long red dress for a voluminous drop-waist gown in the same hue. Next to her, Meryl Streep swapped a little cream set for a bold red Givenchy cape from Sarah Burton’s Fall/Winter 2026 collection.

Then there was Emily Blunt, who stole the show back in 2006 with a spaghetti-strap, lace-trimmed pink midi dress and did so again this time around but in a massive tiered ball gown from the Schiaparelli Spring/Summer 2026 Couture collection.

Ahead, see a side-by-side of the main looks from the 2006 and 2026 premieres.
